CDs have arrived!

After a long day at work, I came home and check the mail.  And to my surprise, my Ubuntu 9.04 CD arrived…with cool Ubuntu stickers too!  To be honest, I was not expecting the CDs to arrive for another few weeks.  I would supply pictures, but the camera is missing for about six months.  I am looking to purchase a new one soon.

So now I have a decision to make, wipe out my entire installation of Ubuntu 9.04 (which was upgraded from 8.10, which was upgraded from 8.04) or leave it.  I have Ubuntu working the way I want, everything is stable, the colors look great, all my data is intact, and I am happy.

On the other hand, I would like to start from fresh and format the drive to ext4, see if I can decrease my boot time from 33 seconds, clear out anything that might be hidden (I know Ubuntu has the Janitor which I did use), and just have something to on Sunday.

Complaints About OpenOffice

Over the weekend, I had to download about 10 different documents written is Microsoft Office 2003 or earlier.  Because I really want to move away from Windows and stay Linux only, I said to myself; “Self – Let’s use OpenOffice to open all of these documents, fill out what needs to be filled out, save, print, and e-mail them to the correct recipients.”

So I downloaded all 10 documents, saved them into a folder on the Desktop, and then used OpenOffice to to read them.  Now comes the problem, each document opened, and I could see all the text, and logos, but each document had tables.  The tables were setup in a form format, and they were a mess.  I then said; “There is no way these documents are supposed to look like this.”  I tried to modify the tables and set cell the way it should be.  But I don’t know how they should look.  So I had to save the documents to my XP partition and reboot to Windows.

So now I am back in XP, I open each document with Microsoft Office 2007, and the documents look 100% better!!  All the cells are aligned correctly, even documents that I opened in OpenOffice which were two pages long, were actually only one page in Office 2007.

I completed my work in Office 2007, printed and saved and rebooted into Ubuntu 9.04.  I copied each document back from the XP partition, into a new sub-folder on my Desktop, and then opened each in OpenOffice.  And each document still looked like a mess, but now the mess had my information in each field.

I’m not sure why Open Office was giving me a hard time about documents with tables.  To me, this is ridiculous, how can anyone expect OpenOffice to be a replacement for Microsoft Office when it can’t open documents with tables?  I’m going to search the Internet for some answers, maybe even post in Ubuntu Forums.  You can give Microsoft all the grief you want about Vista, but in my opinion, Microsoft Office is still the best.  If Microsoft would build a version to run native in Linux, I would purchase it today, or yesterday when I needed it.

Templates in Evolution – Update

Well it turns out Evolution does have a template feature in version 2.26.1.  Here are the steps to create the templates:

  1. Create a new e-mail.
  2. Give it a Subject (this is also the name of the template.)
  3. Modify the body of the e-mail, include and special signatures. fig 1
  4. From the menu bar, click File, Save As Template.  fig 2

In your folder lists located in the left windows panel, you will see the folder Templates.  That folder may have been there before, I’m not sure and I don’t remember.  fig 3 In the Templates folder you will see the template e-mail you created.  fig 4

Now you can right-click an e-mail and respond with a template you designed!  fig 5 You can double click the template from the Templates folder and send a new message without it removing the message from the Templates folder. fig 1

Installed SP2 for Office 2007

Well, I installed SP2 for Office 2007 this morning.  The file was about 297MB, which downloaded in no time.  Installation took about 15 minutes to complete.  After installation I was asked to reboot the PC.  Afterwards I was able to access everything Office 2007 with no problems.  I have to remember next time to grab a screen shot and post it here.

I did check to see if PDF and ODF was available in Word, and it was.  They say I should see an improvement in Outlook, but I didn’t see it on my old PC.  I also saw I can save open source spreadsheets in Excel, but I didn’t have time to try it.

Templates in Evolution

I moved everything over from Windows XP to Ubuntu, and finished getting most of everything migrated from Outlook to Evolution.  I have to admit, I am still working out some personal issues with it, but that’s another topic.

When I used Outlook, I had several templates created.  One for jokes to everyone, another for jokes to others, and another for work I do on the side.  I tried to save a joke template in Evolution, but i can’t seem to figure out how to access that template when I want to send out a joke to my family.  the only thing I saw so far was from Scott Morris in an article called Message Templates in Evolution. It is a good idea, but i was really looking for something where i can save a file to my Desktop and double-click it to open in Evolution and have it ready to go.

I’ll keep searching the Internet, but maybe this is something I can research and build myself.

Release of SP2 for Office 2007

Microsoft has released SP2 for Office 2007.  I guess I will be downloading the SP within a few days.

Update:

I was feeling sick yesterday, and joking I had the swine flu…turns out it was just a cold.  I read some more of SP2 for Office 2007.  It looks like I will be able to open native ODF documents.  Sounds good.  But some wanted to know about Calc file extensions; could the be opened in Excel 2007?  Usually I wait a few weeks before installing a service pack, whether it is from Microsoft or not.  But since I don’t have anything planned for this weekend, maybe I’ll complete the service pack install on Friday night.

Broken Regulator

Well, I had my grill working well until today.  I opened the valve one the regulator and it starting leaking propane gas.  Dinner was served from the stove instead.  All I can say is thank goodness I didn’t have bratwurst tonight.
