Resolved Canon MF743 Communication

I purchased the Canon imageCLASS MF743Cdw in 2020 just before the pandemic. I purchased the print because at the office we had a Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE C5535i. The imageRUNNER scanned well, worked with Windows 10, Windows 11, Mac, and all our mobile devices. Scan to email never failed, and it was easy to manage through the web interface. I really liked this printer and I figured the imageCLASS MF743Cdw would work just as well. It worked almost as expected.

My home network is setup for DHCP, and I set the printer with a static IP address and made the reservation in the router. The MF743 is connected by a wired ethernet cable. The MF743 works great when the Mac can see the printer. However, when the printer reboots due to a power outage or maintenance, the printer add extra characters to it’s name and the Mac can find it. I think I found the answer on a Canon community post.

In the IPv4 Settings, turn off all the DHCP options and enter a specific name for the printer in DNS settings and mDNS Settings. I also used the updated Canon driver instead of Airprint.

So far, I’ve restarted the printer several times and I can print and scan with no issues. I do not have to remove and add the printer when the printer reboots. I still have a problem with printing from mobile devices when he printer is in power save mode. Someone has to tap the screen to wake up the printer and then it is listed under the available devices.

Company Business Trip in 2023

I am on another business trip! This week I am in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Since it is off season (January), the rates are very reasonable. I have book a room with an ocean view.

I am meeting most of my colleagues from the IT department this week. Tonight I get to meet the CEO and then we are off to dinner.

The drive was only 5 hours from Wilmington, Delaware. Most of the drive was cloudy and didn’t rain until I was in Virginia. Depending on how the week goes and if I check out early enough on Saturday, I might drive to the Outer Banks (OBX) and then head home on Sunday.

Update

I was not able to drive to the Outer Banks over the weekend, but during the week I took more pictures from my hotel room. I was able to find time on Friday to walk the beach for an hour and then shop at the souvenir store for some gifts for the family.

Happy New Year 2023

Wishing you a Happy New Year! Delaware Park had a fireworks show tonight. One of the nice things about living close to the track and casino, I can watch the fireworks from the porch.

Remodeled Kitchen

After 16 years of living in Wilmington, Delaware, we finally had our kitchen remodeled! We planned to start the process in 2023, however, the dishwasher kept leaking each time it was used. We had it serviced several times and it worked well for awhile. But soon it would leak somewhere else. So we bumped up the remodel to 2022 and started the design process.

We contacted our plumber who remodeled out bathroom asking if he would be interested in remodeling our kitchen. He replied that he was not running large remodel work right now, bur referred us to another contractor who he worked with before

We met Steve and he said we can get on his schedule in October or November. He put us in contact with a cabinet company with an architect. Once we had the plans drawn up, it was just a matter or meeting with each store to order the appliances, floors, lights, and other materials. Steve scheduled us to start on November 28 and said he would be done by December 29. Below are the pictures before the remodel.

Fortunately for us, the painter Steve hired is the same painter we have used before. So we had the living room and dining room painted to match the new kitchen. Steve completed everything on time by December 23. We are waiting for the custom rain etched pattern picture window to replace the original window when the house was built. Below are the pictures of the completed work.

We are planning to hire the painter in 2023 to repaint the basement. Since I work from home full time, I spoke with Steve to bring him back as well to remodel our sunroom and convert it into my new office. It will need insulation, a heat pump, paint, and some ethernet lines installed for my desk mounted switches and Wi-Fi access.

KICK on Vinyl

In late July of 2022 I picked up a copy of KICK by INXS on vinyl. I was a huge fan of INXS back in the 80’s and 90’s and saw them in Pittsburgh, PA with one of my best friends from high-school. Although I have the album on CD and iTunes, picking up and playing the album brought back some great memories.

You Are Dead to Us

Today I retired my favorite wireless SSID, 404NetworkUnavailable. I’ve used that SSID for about 10 years. It was a good and faithful SSID, and it will be missed. We have watched many YouTube videos together and you have help setup many work computers over the last two years. I’ll remember all the music we listened to and all the games we played against the world.

404NetworkUnavailable, you have kept our networked devices safe with your WPA2 encryption and strong passcode. Your unique name was almost certainly the talk of the neighborhood.

Although a new SSID has taken your place, you could never be replaced.

Goodbye, friend.

Replaced Batteries in my PULSE CD

Today I was listening to PULSE from Pink Floyd and was looking for my CD box. The CD box has a red blinking LED. I remember seeing the CD at the store and I knew I had to have it. PULSE is one of my favorite Pink Floyd albums and I want to purchase the vinyl version for my collection.

I replaced the two original AA batteries in the box and I was shocked it still work. The battery box would not slide out easy because the batteries swelled. The crud on the battery terminals was bad. Now I have a blinking PULSE CD box and enjoying the album on my HomePod.
