Windows Vista Work

The New Job

Well it’s been a few days, and I can say I really like my new job!  First all the building is nice, probably the nicest build I’ve ever worked in.  I work in a cube on the first floor, with a nice big window looking over a nice patch of grass with a walkway.  I an only a few cubes from the free coffee, which is a bonus in my opinion.  After all, I love having coffee while at the computer.  I think it is a little weak, but hey, it’s free and I have a big cup from Krispy Kremes.

The client gave me a HP Elitebook 2530 with Vista (which I am going to see if I can dump it for XP or maybe Linux, but we’ll have to see), plus 8 other PCs running Windows XP / Vista / Windows 7.  All the PCs are connected by Belkin KVM switches.  The guy I replaced fixed a HP 4250 Laser Printer and left it connect to the network in the cube.  So I don’t have to go far for my print outs.

I am supporting 450 PCs which are connect to GCMS and LCs.  I can’t get into more detail, but it is a cool assignment.  There is also a chance to learn and support Linux in a production environment.

One downside is the building is shielded from all outside radio signals, so I can’t receive calls on my cell.  I tried to get the phone right up against the windows, but there was no signal.  They installed an AT&T micro cell to cover the service the client uses.  So now I have to check my voice messages during lunch, which is no big deal, but I still like to answer the phone when someone calls.

All in all, I think this was a smart move for me.  I am closer to home, making a few extra dollars, and doing something I like.  So hopefully I will be here for a few years, and gain a ton of experience.

Moving On

A few weeks ago I received a call from a recruiter stating how I would be a great fit for a new opportunity.  I was about ready to tell him I was not interested at this time because I was on assignment with my employer, but he said a few things that caught my attention.  So I said, “Wow, we need to talk.”  We scheduled an interview for the next day after 6:00 PM.  The interview went well, almost too well.  After the phone interview, I continued on with my evening.

The next day, the recruiter called back and offered me the position as Windows/IT Support Specialist II.  I accepted the offer and started my paperwork.  I also spent the weekend thinking about this decision, and was it the correct decision to make for my family.  Needless to say I submitted my resignation to my employer, and I am ready to move into a new direction with my career.

Ubuntu One

A few weeks ago I installed Dropbox on my Ubuntu 9.04 PC, and it works great.  Now I see Canonical is releasing Ubuntu One to the world (which is still in beta as of this writing.)  I’m not sure if I want to swict from Dropbox, which Ican use on just about any PC to Ubuntu One, which I can only with with Ubuntu 9.04.  I’m sure the software works fine for a beta release, and the storage options are the same as Dropbox, but why would I want to limit myself?

Maybe I am not seeing the bigger picture from a user’s stand point, I can see their picture, making some bucks, which is fine.  I have no problem with it.  Sometimes you need to get paid to continue the work.  I would feel better if I could use Ubuntu One on other PCs with other Linux distros, Mac, or even Windows.  After all, not everyone has Ubuntu Linux, or Mac OS 10.5, or Windows XP / Vista.  I felt a chill writing the “V” word.

Great Hockey Game Last Night

I’m not a big hockey fan, but I do like to watch my old home town play.  So last night I watch the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Washington Capitals in game seven of the Eastern Conference semifinals.  The Penguins scored 2 goals in 8 seconds during the game…impressive.

A Nice Weekend

The weekend went very well for us.  I was up early on Saturday for a bike ride.  The ride was only 7 miles because I had to finish cutting the lawn.  I have a total of 9 bags of grass clipping and weeds that I pulled.  Of course they will be sent to the recycling center this week.

I then grilled Filet Mignon wrapped in bacon, extra large shrimp and green squash.  For dessert we had Rita’s Strawberry MargaRita Italian Ice.  Everyone had a nice time running around the yard, and enjoying the weather.

On Sunday I cleaned out the sun-room, tossed junk from old work assignments, and shredded a ton of other miscellaneous stuff.  We finished off the weekend by grilling burgers, hotdogs, the rest of the shrimp, and the Rita’s Italian Ice

“How would you like to come over and mow my lawn”

The title is from the movie Caddyshack.  The actual quote is:

Judge Smails: Danny, I’m having a party this weekend. [pauses a beat
Judge Smails: How would you like to come over and mow my lawn

Although my lawn is not as big as Judge Smails, the grass is high.  I have not cut it for two weeks.  I put the Scotts Turf Builder With PLUS 2 Weed Control on my lawn a few weeks ago, it has rained almost every day for the last 8 days, and when it stops raining I am at work.

They say the rain will stop this weekend.  If it does, I will have about 6 bags of grass clipping to send off to the recycle center on Wednesday morning.

Sound Problem from my Ubuntu PC

Last night I wanted to watch some videos I downloaded from Youtube.  When I opened them in Totem Movieplayer, there was a nasty audio distortion coming from the speakers.  I don’t remember that happening before.  I tried another video and I had the same problem.  Then I tried a non Youtube downloaded video and the audio distortion was not there.

I opened the Youtube videos in VLC media player and had no problems.  I’m not sure why this was an issue.  I will have to search Google or Ubuntu Forums this weekend.  It’s not a show stopper, but I am courious why this is happening.

Boo Hiss KFC Coupon

On Wednesday May 6th, I received an e-mail from Mom.  It was a link to Oprah.com.  Normally I could care less about going to her web site or watching her show… it’s just not for me.

Anyways, the reason I went there was to get the free coupon for KFC Grilled Dinner.  FREE FOOD?!?  I’m there!  When I went to download or print the coupon, I was stopped by the error message from KFC.  They only way I can download the coupon was if I was using Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or above.  WTF?

Unfortunatlly the coupon downlaod / print offer was only valid until 11:59 PM on Wednesday May 6th.  I forgot to reboot into Windows to get the coupon.

Looks like I was not the only one having problems.
