Fading Fix for HP Color LaserJet 2605

Over the last 2 months or so, I’ve noticed my color print outs did look as good as they use to.  For example, I was working on a new idea for Cub Scouts, designing a new pit pass for the scouts to wear for Pinewood Derby in Spring 2014.  The pass included a red, blue and yellow car, but the colors were off.  The red car car looked yellow-orange with yellow flames.

So I ran the color calibration from the printer, and afterwards, the pit pass looked the same.  I prided the supplies status page to verified there is toner, but it looks faded.  So I stared searching for a reason why this was happening, and I came across the following page.

HP Colour LaserJet Fading Fix

The problem is the mirrors in the optical box on the HP Color LaserJet 2605, the box is not sealed.  The mirror for the magenta cartridge collects a lot of dust.  This dust keeps the laser from reflecting off the mirror correctly, and preventing toner from being picked up and placed on the paper.

The process took me about 2 hours 45 minutes to complete, but it was well worth it.  My printer works great.  Except for this one issue, the output is fantastic.  Also, I didn’t have to spend $300 plus on a new printer.  Below are pictures of the status supply pages.

iPhone 5S Color Choice

At work, there are several clients who are thinking about purchasing a new iPhone 5S.  I was amazed how many wanted to get a new iPhone in Champagne/White vs White/Silver and Black/Slate.  Most of everyone I’ve talked to are looking forward to a bump up in storage from 16GB to 32GB (for entry models).

Are you thinking about purchasing a new iPhone 5S?

Bike Riding Exercise Personal

Fitbit Flex

Over the years I’ve tried to spend some time exercising.  Usually riding my bike (bought a bike trainer for Christmas 2012 for the winter), walking or hiking.  Although I’ve had some success with weight loss or maintaining my weight, I’ve been wanting to lose some more weight.  Exercise is a great way to accomplish this, but I never seem to get anywhere.  I need to track my calories, and being a gadget guy, I bought a FitBit Flex on August 1st.

Fitbit Flex

What do I like about the Fitbit Flex?  It’s easy to use.  Install the app on your Mac or PC, connect the Bluetooth Sync Dongle, and setup your online account and set some goals.  Then download the app for your mobile device, and start walking, jogging, or running.  Fitbit Flex will track your steps, distance traveled, calories burned, active minuets, hours slept, and quality of sleep.  You will need Bluetooth 4.0 in your mobile device to sync directly to the Fitbit app.

There are a list of other apps that work with FitBit including my favorite, MyFitnessPal.  You can also set goals, earn badges, and workout with friends.

With the wrist band, the device is water resistant, not water proof.  You can leave it on while washing your hands to taking a shower, but you shouldn’t swim with it.  Fitbit Flex is light weight, and I don’t pay much attention to it.  I’ll check my progress through out the day by double tapping on the face.  Flashing dots appear to show me how far I am to reaching my goal.  Once I hit my goal, the device buzzes like a phone on silent and flashes lights on the front.  I have to admit, it is a good feeling knowing i hit my goal for the day.

With MyFitnessPal and Runtastic, I can track my calories burned and try to keep under my allocated calories for the day.

I’ve lost some weight within the last three weeks.  I’m learning to eat smarter by watching my caloric intake and understanding I can have a snack once in a while, but it may cost me later for dinner, or maybe longer periods of exercise.  I know it’s common sense, but sometimes you have to go back and retrain yourself on making better choices.

Finder Background Color Button Locked

Finder (software)
Finder (software) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Over the last 18 months, I’ve been using my iMac as my main computer.  I configured multiple Desktops (spaces) changed the screensaver, installed programs, games (Diablo 3 and Steam for Team Fortress 2).  Basically making it my own, just like I do with Windows and Linux.

So one day I was looking at other features of Finder, and decided to change the window color from white to green for the Documents folder.  You can do this by clicking the gear icon and Show View Options.  After I goofed with the colors, I reset it back to white.  then I noticed I can add a picture to the background.  I copied over a jack-o-lanter picture I found last year and there was the small picture I copied.  Then I decided to change the Arrange by from None to Name and clicked the Use as Defaults.  I closed the window and didn’t think anything of it for a week.

When I came back a week later, I noticed some of my Finder windows had the jack-o-lanter as the wallpaper.  I went through the process to remove the wallpaper, but noticed I could not change the wallpaper.  It was stuck with the jack-o-lantern.  After some searching on Google, I found a post by Pigstick on mac-forums.com which explained how undo what I did.

Change the Arrange by to None, then you can reset the background to any color or change the picture.  Don’t forget to click the Use as Defaults button.

Thanks Pigstick!

Happy New Year

Happy New Year – 2013

It is amazing how much things can change within a year.  My father retired after almost 47 years, my mother closed her shop, and they purchased a new larger house to be closer to the grand-kids.  My son has taken up the Alto Saxophone and is plays it well.  He is also active in Cub Scouts and playing chess, going outdoors to ride bikes and scooters, and rollerskating.  My daughter really likes ice skating and learning chess like her big brother.  Plus she has taken an interest in sci-fi shows and computer games.  They enjoy playing with my iPad and iPod, and my daughter has a Discovery notebook “computer” with a pretend office she made in the basement for “going to work.”  Both are healthy, doing well in school, have many friends, and very active imaginations.  I am very proud of my children, and I wish them all the best in the years to come.

My wife and I are thankful for our careers.  Sometimes the hours are long and he days can be stressful, but it’s better than the alternative – being unemployed.

The family went on our first out of state vacation in three years.  The kids were excited to spend a week in Disney World.  All year long the kids kept saving their money to purchase souvenirs at all the parks.  We enjoyed Universal Studios, Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, and Epcot.  It was a pleasant and relaxing vacation, until the end.  A storm came in and caused delays at the Orlando and Atlanta airports.

We also have worked on our house by removing all the carpet during summer vacation, employed a landscaper to fix the landscaping I attempted, cleared out junk that we were holding on to for no reason, and painting the kids rooms.  I also replaced the canvas top to the kid’s swing-set to watch Super-storm Sandy rip it to shreds.  We also lost the backyard gate during the storm.  Fortunately no other damage occurred.

There was some sadness this year at home and professionally.  My uncle passed in late October, my father in-law is in the hospital, and 10 people I support at work were selected to be laid off by end on January 2013.  I attended retirement lunches and parties for several colleagues who were the best to work with and made my job easier.  Hopefully we will stay in contact and continue to have lunches through 2013.  All will be missed.

Here’s to wishing you a Happy New Year for 2013!
